Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: Video Game Overview

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Harry, Hermione and Ron continue in their quest to vanquish the remaining brood of Horcruxes before Harry's epic final showdown with Lord Voldermort. The site of this ultimate battle between good and evil is the magical school of Hogwarts. Storm into the barricaded vaults of Gringotts Bank, get refuge from Fiendfyre in the breath taking Rook of Requirements and take the fight to Lord Voldermort's most formidable allies. The action is the most spectacular EA Sports have come up with in the Harry Porter series.

Right from the start, it is clear that the days of learning spells, mixing potions and juvenile ramblings in the Hogwarts' school of magic, have given way to riveting confrontation. Like Part 1, Deathly Hallows 2 is an intense battle where machine guns, pistols and grenade launchers are replaced by spell-spitting magic wands.

You not only play as Harry but at various stages, you will take on other characters as well including Hermione, Ron, Ginny, Molly Weasley and even Professor McGonagall. Each plays a vital part in defending Hogwarts and keeping Voldermart's hordes at bay. You will need to employ as many elements of advanced wizardry as you can muster if you are to emerge victorious over the forces of darkness that include Snatchers, Death Eaters and giants.

While Hogwarts has been an intrinsic part of previous series, Deathly Hallows 2 brings it out in a way that is different from others before it. Battle fields are strewn with objects you can conveniently take cover behind and either fire blindly or pop up to take aimed shots. Note however that the more you fire non-stop, the worse your aim gets. Part 2 clearly favours pausing and taking aim before you shoot. If you have played Gears of War video, the fighting technique in Deathly Hallows 2 is strikingly similar.

Use the Expelliarmus to break the foes magical shield. Enemies can 'apparate' - a plume of smoke signals their appearance. You too will be able to 'apparate' as you progress further into the game though this teleporting is limited to short distances of no more than 10 metres. One of the most exciting parts of the game is when you provide cover from enemy fire for Seamus Finnigan.

Deathly Hallows 2 is comparatively short - just shy of 4 hours - and this might be disappointing for hard core gamers. But on the bright side, this is not necessarily a bad thing as not many people can muster the time (nor is it encouraged) to realistically play a video game for 6 or 8 hours non-stop. When you complete the campaign, sequences can be replayed in Challenge Mode where you can evaluate your completion times.

Part 1 was great but came under considerable criticism with some reviews even going as far as asserting that it did not live up to the high standards that was expected of the official Harry Porter game. The design of Deathly Hallows 2 is a substantial improvement and is in fact pretty impressive even when compared to games in the same genre.

You are more likely to understand the different parts and characters of Part 2 if you have watched the movie. On the other hand, the game narratives are not the same as those of the film and this helps remove predictability for players that have already watched it. Interestingly, the lack of elaborate character development and real plot in Deathly Hallows 2 is a positive - you avoid the less-than-joyful path of the book and movie.
