Three MMORPGs To Try Out This 2012

Massively multiplayer online role-playing games or MMORPGs, is a specific video game genre that includes a very large number of players, all role-playing and interacting within a virtual game world. Usually, after signing up, members are asked to assume a character that has been specifically made for the fantasy environment they are about to explore. They will then personalize it with profile information, physical characteristics and traits. They are distinguished from other multiplayer games by the fact that everything still evolves and exists even after a player goes out.

The advantages listed for this type of recreation is the opportunity it provides players to socialize, as well as challenge their creativity and analytical skills. Moreover, mmo games also give them the chance to act out their fantasies, test their limits and learn lessons they won't normally pick up from their real life experiences. The downsides listed for it include addiction, stagnation, and the blurring of actual circumstances with make-believe. Regardless of the contradictions though, MMORPGs continue to be one of the most saleable gaming products of the 21st century, exceeding revenues of $1.4 billion as of 2008.

Over the years, World of Warcraft and Age of Conan have been among the most popularly played multiplayer role-playing games on the internet. This 2012, here are some of the mmo games that will grow in popularity as the two aforementioned.

1. EVE Online - Eve has been around in 2003, but it has yet to claim the same success as WOW. As of 2012, it already has 400,000 subscribers. What is appealing to this game is its use of "StarTrek"-like plot with stargates, 7,500 star systems, wormholes, asteroid belts and customizable ships. However, it does incorporate standard in-game activities and professions like exploration, combat, trade, manufacturing and piracy. Duels can be played against the environment or against other players, and upgrades and trainings are usually based on real time.

2. Guild Wars - This was released back in 2005 and has steadily grown in popularity as the years went by. It is basically one of those mmo games with a historical subplot encouraging players to go for missions and quests. Different characters usually group together and form guilds to complete tasks, and the most successful ones may compete during gaming conventions and win prizes. A sequel was in the process of creation last 2007 out of the critics and the user's positive response, with updated graphics and mechanics, but it is yet to be released (rumoured to be around this year).

3. The Secret World - Like Guild Wars 2, this is yet to be distributed, but there has been quite a buzz about it since the announcement of its creation in 2007. It will basically have a setting that plays both contemporary and medieval themes together. It is said to represent a modern world, but will play historical, legendary and mythological elements into the back story. Familiar and fictional locations will be incorporated and everything from vampires to demons will be introduced.
